one that breathes through their skin

i encountered this citizen on the bike path yesterday morning.  he was in a kind of drowse on the pavement, but he got a little more frisky after a few moments crawling around on my fingers. he was so dark complected that i couldn’t tell if his shiny black eyes were opened or closed.

the theory i’m choosing to believe is that he was scrambling around in the grass and slipped on to the cold concrete, and that the drop in body temperature sent him into torpor.  And that he’s now safe in his boggy little home snacking on waterbugs.
